Maker's Marks - How common are they?

I've seen some advertise CI with these marks. Seems like they would either all have them or none would have them.

Why would only some have them?
 
They either serve to identify a pattern maker or a hand casting molder being paid by the piece. Other than those two instances, they would be unnecessary.
