My Cast Iron Holy Grail Arrived today

My interest in cast iron started when I saw a small cast iron grill in a thrift store that I thought I couldn't live without. He only accepted cash, and like many others I'm so used to everyone accepting debit cards I had none on me. So when I completed my day trip the store was closed and as luck would have it, the following weekend the little grill was gone. So I started researching the little grills and accidentally learned WAY MORE about pots, pans, cauldrons, kettles and dutch ovens than I had ever dreamed even existed. I ran across some deals on some vintage iron and quickly set up a lye tank, vinegar / water tank and a corner of the kitchen for the seasoning process. But, today.......I received the item that started it all! That first bite that began this addiction an Atlanta Stove Works sportsman with a BONUS shallow fish fryer. This pleases me greatly, however it's no cure because now I want a BSR and Lodge model for a triple set!

I happy you found the ONE you have been looking for. It makes my day to see a search pay off. In time after using it tell us what you love about it and some of the other side of the coin. Just curious I like those too.

Woohoo!! Congrats Lloyd! I'm really happy you found what you were looking for! (and it gives me hope I will someday find MY Holy Grail!)

Congratulations Lloyd! That is a really nice grill and fryer. Will you be frying fish for the friends and family when better weather returns? (I look forward to Spring. Cold weather gets tiresome so fast!) Thanks for sharing your find with us.:icon_thumbsup:

Lloyd, while I'm thinking about it ... I'll be interested to hear about how you go about frying dish on your grill. I've only done it a couple of times and found it hard to regulate the heat. (I do plan on using the "practice makes perfect" method next year. Ha!)

Here are a couple of pics of some hushpuppies and fish I did last summer.

And here's a pic to show you can put a #10 skillet on there and still have room for a couple of big breasts.

@Lloyd, great score, congrats.

@Bonnie, nice youtube link. I also found his "part 1" educational. Thanks.

@Spurgeon, have you tried the method of keeping the coals on only one side of the grill, giving you a direct heat section, an indirect heat section, and transition in between?

I'm not very computer literate. What's with the "@"s?

It's just a tag.

Some forums, etc. support functionality that actually creates some sort of an alert notifying the tagged person that they are being mentioned.

This forum doesn't support that, but the habit/practice has sort of spilled over into general electronic communications (including group emails) to draw more attention to a name if one's just glancing over it, to help avoid someone overlooking something addressed to them.

I did try moving the coals to one end, but when the fry pan covers the whole grill, it didn't help much. Ha!

Ah, right, frying.... :shootself:

Yeah, I guess like you said, that'll be a bit of trial-and-error balancing the number of coals with the amount of fry oil...

Well, I never intended on frying fish on it but now that I have the fryer I guess I'll try! I really don't have to wait for any better weather as it's still in the high 70s and low 80s here right now. Who knew I'd get so much pleasure from Cast Iron? Glad to be part of this group of C.I. lovers! I will certainly document my experiments with this one to share - good or bad LOL!

Two or three pieces of square steel rod 1/2 x1/2 x12” between the grate and the pan will lower the oil temp about 10% and can be removed when the fire calms down.

Great find and congratulations! I'd love one of those someday when I have a place for it. Please show us a pic when you've cleaned it up. :-D I enjoyed the little back story too.

Congrats on filling your bucket list! That's got to be satisfying. A BSR Sportsman grill is my bucket list item. Saw a BSR fryer the other day which was $150 - I never even picked it up after seeing the price tag.

I'm curious how you maintain the grill after it's cleaned and seasoned. It seems like the fire would burn off the seasoning, please advise.

I'm hoping I can treat it like my smoker, wipe down after use with oil but we shall see!

That's a wonderful grill and fish fryer, since the 3052 pan is a BS&R round handle pan then the BS&R 3093 lid/griddle or even the Wildlife series lid will fit perfectly.

I found the secret to maintaining the grill is to give it a sprits of cooking spray on the outside while the grill is hot then make sure you clean out the ashes before you put it away and never leave it out in the weather.

Thank you Bonnie Scott
The videos on YouTube that you mentioned are of my collection. Started out innocently enough then got bit hard by the CI bug.
Glad you liked the videos, wish I was better at making them there is so much more to offer that I did not get to.
