Hi There,
This is my first WAPAK, one doesn’t find many of them around here; actually it is only the second one I have seen in the last several months. It was pretty cruddy when I bought it and I could see the sulphur pitting, but the interior looked decent and I didn’t have a WAPAK, so I bought it. I don’t have a before picture as I was excited to see what it was going to look like after the lye bath, and in it went before I could snap a photo.
It went from the lye tank into the de-rusting tank of ‘EVAPO-RUST’, as my e-tank was in use; after that on inspection before seasoning I noticed a red-rusty-muddy color in the pitting, so it went back into the de-rusting tank for another day. When I took it out the red-rusty color was still there, I realized it wasn’t really rust so I took out my trusty drill with a fine wire brush and attacked it, but it didn’t budge! My e-tank was now free so in it went and a day later the red-rusty looking crap was gone.
Cleaned up it went through three session of Crisco seasoning. I preheat the cast iron up to 200* in the oven, apply a coating of Crisco and then wipe it all off, back in the oven and heated up to 300*, wait about 10 minutes and take it out and re-wipe it to make sure all the excess oil is wiped off then back in the over set the temp to 500* and bake for an hour and a half or so, let it cool down in the oven and do it at least two more times. The pictures show it after three seasonings.
The blue book states the circa to be between 1903-1926; as the Wapak Hollow Ware Company stated business in1903 and ended in bankruptcy in 1926, it’s a safe guess!
PS: I am not sure what the purple blotches are in the pictures, it must be a reflection as they are not there in real life!!
