My other find today - a raised 8 single-notch

I bought this today in Elijay for $15. Seems to be in great shape. I came home and put it in the lye until my wife went to bed. I just washed it off ... and as I was washing it, I was thinking this might be the smoothest pan I have! ... But as I was drying it, I started noticing a similar color that I had on my Experimental #5. Now I'm wondering if somebody used some power tools on it to smooth out some rough spots. It has a silvery look in some spots. It will be interesting to see what it looks like after a round of fresh seasoning...

Nice, old, single notch Lodge. I doubt anyone used any power tools on it. They were polished/ground very smooth--at least the ones I've had/have.

I would agree that most single-notches I've encountered are noticeably smoother than most other makers. Lodge for some time offered plain, polished, and mirror finish, much like, I suppose, BSR who offered A and AA polish grades during the Red Mountain period.

The smoothest pans I have are Lodge. They are like glass. I just refurbished a number 8 three notch that had the best cooking surface I have ever seen. I gave it to a buddy as a wedding gift. Those pans are my favorite, just not as purdy as their competition at the time. Good find my friend.

Spurgeon,
I just had a thought. It seems like your pans have been revolting since you started the LYE bath. Are you sure you got 100% Lye crystals? There were 100 different types when I went to get mine and I almost walked out with one that had a ton of additives. I assume those would not be great for our iron. Just a thought. It looks fine to me. Just needs some seasoning, few rounds of bacon and cornbread and then maybe a porter house to boot. Have a blessed day.

Kyle, the lye I found was definitely 100% sodium hydroxide. I think my problem lately has been poor buying decisions. Ha! But this skillet turned out great. The weird color I noticed went away upon seasoning.
