Never had a nickel plated skillet - can this one be cleaned up?

This is a curiosity question for learning purposes ...

They wanted $50 for this Griswold #8. Would it clean up okay? It seems like the nickel is worn through in a bunch of places. Or is that just dirt that will come off?

I didn't buy it. I'm just wanting to know if this is too far gone, so I'll know what to look for in the future.

A bit more worn than I'd want to give $50 for. This is why collectors like bare iron in VG-EX condition over worn plated. This is also chrome. Griswold produced some pieces in what they called DuChro; some portions were mirror polished, others left dull. They will sometimes clean up better than expected.

Thanks. I started to say "chrome". Always go with your first guess. Ha!

I thought $50 was really high. I loved how lightweight it was though.

Just speaking for myself when it comes to plated iron I don't have a interest. If I was a collector and wanted an example I would look for one in near as close to mint I could find. But that one for $50 I would also walk away.

Just remember I've seen this term mentioned a number of times. When it's for sale and Griswold, its Grisgold. there are a lot of good deals still out there if your willing to take a little time.

I've just now seen this thread, but wish to make a quick comment. That skillet cleaned up would make a great user, but $50.00?! "Grisgold" indeed! I'm getting royally tired of people selling items by the brand name when they obviously have no idea of what they actually have. <growl>
