New Lodge vs Old Gris Skillet

If I'm just looking for a performance CI skillet, is there a difference between a modified Lodge and an old Gris?

Looks like the surface can be equally smooth. I was under the impression that you couldn't easily grind down the surface to get a super slick finish as shown in the video.

Is there any fundamental difference in the iron or would a modified Lodge work the same?

It should work the same. The main difference being that the new Lodge is thicker cast and thus heavier. Depending on the application, a heavier pan may be preferred. Especially where you want the pan to be able to hold onto a lot of energy, like searing.
