Old Serving Platter w/gateway mark - ID/age?

I picked this piece up because I wanted it for display vs. use, though I might consider it for roasting asparagus, as it's the perfect size! I just love the handle detailing on this piece though, so I'd be heartbroken if I accidentally broke one of them, as it is lighter and thinner than most other CI pieces.

Any ideas as to possible age or maker?

Hi JenniferM:
I hope all is well,

I think sometimes these are called Fish Platters, but I'm not sure the maker.

Regardless, it seems to be a very beautiful piece!

Jennifer,

Those fish platter things are banned in the state of North Carolina, yet completely legal in Georgia. You could always send it south...

Thank you JD! I'll see if I can google up something with some information on it.

HAH! :whip2: Nice try ... I think I've resolved that it won't be a user, but a displayer, or perhaps a nice place to hold the salt, pepper & napkins on the table. It's actually covered in HDOC as I type.

Speaking of, I had a can of the Easy Off HDOC, and ran out. I stopped in a store this morning to snag more, and they had a generic HDOC that noted it did contain lye so I thought, what the heck. I used that when I got home and was amazed at how much better the generic foamed up on contact over the branded EO-HDOC. And I saved a few bucks to boot, because it was buy 4 for $5! Just an FYI for anyone who reads this ...

I doubt this is a serving platter. Seems more indicative of a sad iron heater. On a wood stove, two eyes and the middle connecting piece between them would be removed and this would be set in their place. Sad irons would then be set on this to heat up for ironing clothes.

Really? With handles this "decorative"? Just seems a little too ornamental for such a functional concept, but I guess anything is possible.

For it to be a serving piece, the expectation would be that it would have feet to prevent it wobbling on the gate. I would agree with sad iron heater.

Thank you Kevin & Doug. After googling "sad iron heaters", it would appear a most likely answer! And yes, the issue with the gate marking & wobble makes sense. It does have a slight wobble because of that. Any way to ID a possible maker? It only has the NO 7 on it.

I agree with the sad iron use.

The maker is lost to time.

Put some felt pads on the bottom, for use on your table as you stated.

Is it possible that this was made by Favorite Piqua Ware before they labeled/branded items? Reason I ask is - in looking at the FPW logo on a pan, the decorative mark under the name is very similar to the handle style of my tray.

Thoughts?
