Oven cleaner?

I used oven cleaner and sprayed the heck out of my pan. Wrapped it up in a garbage bag and left it outside for two days I changed the bag and added more spray every 2-3 days and continued this for almost two weeks. I followed it up with a vinegar bath for an hour and a half to remove the lye.
Has anyone tried this a and is it safe? It worked wonderfully but am looking for information on how others clean their CI.
 
Before setting up a lye bath, I used oven cleaner in a bag, and it works fine. The problem is the expense if you're going to be doing a lot of pieces. A pound of lye costs about the same as a can of oven cleaner, but you can use the lye bath again and again.
