After doing a bit of digging, it seems like using oxalic acid is a viable form of rust removal and is used on other items, but I couldn't turn up anything here. It is in BKF, so should be OK in a bath.
For those without an E-tank it seems more ideal than vinegar. Instead of buying gallon jugs you could get a canister of concentrate & mix it with water. Not sure on how much to add to get a similar concentration as a 50/50 vinegar mix, but seems doable and possibly cheaper. Maybe even better for plated pieces?
Anyone with any experience? Here's a link I found with a bit of info/testing on other metal objects: Oxalic Rust Removal
