Before posting this thread, I re-read the "Numbers & Letters" section of our C.I.C and didn't find a definite answer to this question.
Have recently wondered if the letters "O" & "I" were omitted when manufactures used pattern letters in conjunction with their pattern numbers? The reason I ask this is because I recently saw an ERIE skillet that had a pattern number of 7110 all the same size with no indication that the 0 may have been a "letter O" and not a zero at all. Of course checking the BB there was not a 7110 but only a 711. According to the ERIE time line chart it would be a 6th series skillet. Just out of curiosity I did a rough count of the three digit pattern numbers (apx. 165) in the back of the BB that ended in a 1 or 0. Further checking there were (apx. 75) four digit pattern numbers. These were of course cast iron and not aluminum. Most of the four digit numbers were Iron Mountain, Meritt and Puritan plus the dampers, hot plates, trivets griddles, etc.
Most of my pieces seem to be limited to the letters A-H on various Mfg.'s with the occasional "x" or "y".
Sorry for such long explanation but I still wonder if that ERIE skillet was perhaps mismarked?
