Picking South Alabama

Took a trip across Mobile Bay to Foley, AL to see what we could see in a day's time. Covered a lot of ground down State Hwy 59, but only came home with one piece of iron, and not an antique. Heading south from I-10:

Alice and Wonderland
7245 N Hickory St (AL Hwy 59), Loxley
A few pieces here and there. Way overpriced. Unmarked skillets ~ $40, Wagner Jr. Korn Kob $80, etc.

Plunderosa Antiques
26210 US-90 (AL Hwy 59), Loxley
Mostly furniture and architecturals, no iron to speak of. One unmarked Vollrath DO with no lid, fire ruined, $45.

Thiseldo Vintage Stuff
26099-A Highway 59, Loxley
A few stacks of skillets, in decent shape. Mostly Lodge, BSR. Prices OK. Nice little place, items merchandised by color or material.

European Treasures
22208 State Highway 59 S, Robertsdale
Mostly furniture, a couple of pieces of iron seen, priced high. Need an antique armoire, this is your place.

Ponder Antiques
207 State Highway 59 N, Summerdale
Furniture, no iron.

Foley Flea Market
14809 State Highway 59, Foley
Mini-storage facility converted to dealer rooms. A lot of junk. Saw no iron.

Old Armory Mall
812 N Mckenzie, Foley
Several pieces, many recasts with gate marks, most cleaned, overpriced.

(For some unknown reason, even and odd street numbers switch to opposite sides south of US98.)

Heritage Antique Mall
802 S Mckenzie, Foley
Didn't see any iron.

Le Creuset Store
Tanger Outlet Mall
2601 S Mckenzie St, Foley
Seconds on sale can be a bargain, in LC terms, anyway. Added to my ECI collection.

Fran's On 59
8153 State Highway 59, Foley
Mainly a high end landscaping place with a few expensive antique items.

Old Time Pottery
7976 State Highway 59, Foley
Not antiques, but lots of home decorating merchandise in what looks like a converted former large Wal-Mart.

Sorry to hear your picking trip didn't turn out so well. Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug I guess. Sure it was nice just to get away and hunt though. Saw an LC ECI skillet at a thrift shop while traveling away from my area the other day. Not a big one but was nice. White and didn't look used very much. As I recall it was only $5-$10. Almost bought it. Ended up getting a Braun immersion blender, like new, for $5.

Part of it is also in the learning where not to bother going back. And there was something interesting to see in all the places visited, even if there wasn't anything in the way of iron. As far as antiqueing destinations go, nearly a dozen places all on the same street is a pretty good day's worth. And you never know-- as you said-- what you might stumble across. I picked up a NIB Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem with a 4-port router and wireless built in for $6 recently.

Exactly. I found a Griswold Large Logo #8 skillet in a wooden box with a bunch of junk at an antique store that had almost no cast iron to speak of (excluding cast pulleys and old decorative farm hardware).

The box was tucked behind some vinyl albums in a corner.

Never hurts to look.
