Proof You Can Still Find Some Good CI at a Goodwill

Good find even without the lid. If I see it correctly, it was only $7.99.

I can't find anything like that here in Atlanta. If it comes to a store, the staff probably buys it first. I know I would.

Post a picture once you have seasoned it.

I added some after pics to the imgur link. I had a Wagner glass lid that fits the oven well so that will have to do for now. Maybe someday I will find a better match. The oven is in great shape. Perfectly flat with just some just some very light pitting on the inside that's pretty much just cosmetic and should season over well. A great buy for $7.99 for no doubt.

That was a great find. In my neck of the woods the Goodwill managers have to hold the cast-iron for auction. I wish they would sell it on the floor here.... I have a much later Griswold/Wagner Dutch Oven, it came with a lid but not a true marriage. I want one like you found.....

That looks like a stealer find. By the sounds of it, goodwill is a place to look depending on the area you live in. I was in one this past weekend, and found a #5 mold Y BSR red mountain series, that I picked up for $10. Cleaned it in a homemade electrolysis tank, seasoned it once, and it's a great egg cooker already.

Wow! Nice find. It's hit or miss here, mostly miss, on the CI at goodwill. They send most to auction (along with the Pyrex) but an occasional piece ends up on the floor. Those are few and far between however.

The amount of CI (and Pyrex) in my collections found at Goodwill is less than half a percent of total. Far less. There's only one store in my area I've ever found any at, and I no longer even bother to make it a regular stop.

Anyone else like vintage pyroceram Corningware? Between cast iron and vintage Corningware (blue cornflower mostly) makes up almost all my currently used cooking ware. It's a great combo. :icon_thumbsup: that can be found at thrift stores pretty easily and restored with barkeepers friend.

The only CI piece I've ever contemplated buying at a GW store was a dark purple Technique enameled pan with a raised diamond pattern on the cooking surface. They wanted $14 for it so I passed. I figured it was made in China but it was such an unusual piece I was seriously tempted. I've seen an occasional camp oven, but they were always China made Texsport, Camp Chef, or the like. Never saw a Lodge. I picked up a 3-notch Lodge #8 skillet and an unmarked Wagner grill pan off their auction site, but even then it was only because nobody had bid on them and shipping was cheap. Some of the bidding gets crazy in that site. I've seen bids go over $100 for #12 Wagner and Griswold skillets without any word of how flat they sit in the description. Yikes!

I found a lot of my cast iron at Goodwill and other thrift stores. But you almost have to be there when they roll out a cart with a piece on it. Once it hits the shelves someone will snap it up quick unless it's not really collectible. Also they have different employees pricing items some price everything cheap others on the high end of its value. Then you have to either wait and hope you are lucky enough to get it when it's marked down 1/2 price (have as good a chance of winning the lottery) or you pay more than you would like! (No thrill of the deal)
I haven't sold anything yet but it also means no room for profit 🙄
