Question about carbon

I don't have an e-tank--just a lye tub. If after much scrubbing with SS scrubber and Dawn, I cannot get a patch of carbon off the pan, what should I do?

And--what would happen if I went ahead with seasoning?

I followed Doug's advice and scrubbed with vinegar and a SS scrubber. That faded the carbon smudge some, but when I reached a point of dismissing returns, I called it good. It's now in the oven, and I'll post after about 3 rounds of seasoning. I'm expecting there won't be anything visible when the whole pan turns black...
