Question concerning Gate

I have a gate marked cast iron skillet. I was wondering was there different brand kits for gated skillets? Mine was well used but the handle was unique.

I think I read somewhere that you could make a cast iron skillet at home. Not sure if this was true or not, I understand the necessary processes needed and found this interesting if true. But if it was true someone would need to supply a pattern for the casting. Calling it a kit might just be me projecting my 21st century nomenclature.

If anyone was doing homemade castings, they were more likely of easily-melted aluminum and used an existing cast iron pan for a pattern. Melting iron is an entirely more difficult and resource-intensive proposition, one that a person just wanting a cast iron pan would find extremely cost-ineffective.
