Quick question on a waffle maker

I was wondering if anyone could give me info on a Wagner Waffle maker marked Wagner Ware Sydney -o- 1408. The seller said that there is a serial number of what seems to be 15-1520. I ask because I have an #8 Wagner base and am hoping this is a #8. Any info would be helpful.

The 1408 is a #8. The 15-1520 is probably all the seller could make out underneath it's seasoning. The whole thing reads PAT'D SEPT. 15-1925. I don't know if all Wagner #8 waffle irons are interchangeable with other Wagner #8 bases. According to the Red Book the earliest #8's were 7-1/2" diameter and the ones right before they started using catalog numbers were 7-9/16". Could be they just rounded to the nearest half inch on the older ones, or maybe an older base won't fit a newer iron properly and that's how they distinguished one from the other. Unless someone with more Wagner waffle iron experience than I have chimes in, you might want to bring your base with you and see for yourself to be sure.

Thanks Ty. The base I have fits my 1910 Wagner waffle iron. I was not sure if the 1408/1925 model is the same size or not. Thanks for the info. It seems it may not fit, but it is an online purchase so I won't have the chance to check it out before hand. Anyone else have a few Wagner Irons that they can try out an see if they work? Thanks for the help,
Kyle

The 1910 is a larger ball opening compared to the 1408/1925. I believe they are slightly different in diameter size. I have both of them with a 1408/1925 base. The 1910 ball head will not fit in the socket properly. I'm currently contemplating what I will do (modify base, buy another base, make a base). If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Is there any way to modify the base to fit the 1910? I have thought about widening the opening by force, but I risk breaking the socket. Would a Dremel work in opening up the socket? It is very snug and won't turn.

If I was able to get a 1910 base, would the 1925 work in it properly since it slightly smaller?

The 1910 makes great waffles. I just placed the iron on the stove (electric) and would flip it carefully. Not the ideal thing to do. I'm not able to use the 1408 yet due to the fact that some moron painted the iron and I need to find the best way to remove the paint without adding toxic chemicals into it. An e-tank is not an option at this point considering my apartment doesn't have a balcony.

Does anyone know what the difference is with the 1408/1910 iron compared to the 1910 and 1408/1925? I saw this iron on ebay earlier in the week.

The difference between the patents is supposed to have something to do with the design of the shoulder at the ball hinge. You can take a look at both at http://www.castironcollector.com/patents.php and see if you can tell what it is.

You can't bend cast iron, and the recommendation here will never be to grind on collectible cast iron to make something fit.

I know I should grind on it. I just need a working base that will accommodate both irons if possible.

Any tips on making a base?

Don't ruin a perfectly good base! Hang onto it and either trade it or sell it; bases seem harder to come by than irons. There are facebook groups you could join where trading and selling are done.

I have since acquired another 1910. This one does have the base. The 1925 will work in the 1910 base without a problem.

I have noticed a difference in the two 1910's that I have. One of them has the same dimple patterns as the 1925 iron while my first one has much smaller ones. They both match up with each other, so there is not a difference in the size or compatibility. Does anyone know when they made the changes? I always like to know approximately when my CI was made. Now that I see a difference in pattern, it can narrow down the years.

I'll try to attach photos.

Not likely to be a conscious change in design, but rather just a variation from one pattern to the next.
