Quick question!

Which base goes with a Griswold waffle iron with paddles 976/977 and a ball hinge? I'm at an antique store and they have one that's paired with an 884 base that I don't think is correct. Still learning, lol.

That should be an acorn hinge, not a ball hinge. Should be a good match. But with the pic I don't recognise that hinge. You got me.

976/977 p/ns are also seen on irons made by Griswold for third parties. Other than the matches listed in the table on the waffle iron page, taken from a Griswold catalog, knowing exactly which went with which in other cases can be maddening. If the hinge on this one moves freely in the socket and the profile of the cut-out for the handle shank seems correct (flat vs. rounded) for the paddles, then one could surmise it's a match. Although it should seem the 975 would be the better guess.

Thanks for the quick replies. Here's two more shots of it. They have it listed for $90...hmmm, should I or shouldn't I? 🤔

976/977 irons previously had the acorn hinge. When viewing an acorn hinge set in an 884 base, there appears to be quite a bit of extra headroom in the socket. Perhaps when the switch was made to the first ball hinge, it was sized to fit the existing 884 socket. Hard to say, though as there are at least 4 different 884 bases, one for finger hinge and three for acorn (and ball?) hinge.

As waffle irons go, regular pattern 8s are the most common, and are consistently valued lower than other sizes and paddle designs. If you really like/want it, and it has no damage, go for it. Me, I would offer $70 or $75 and see what they say.
