Raised 8 Griddle Id?

Any ideas? My brother picked it up for me and all I had a picture of at the time was the top pic with the raised 8, I figured it would be gate marked but I guess not. The rough casting on the underside of handle has me concerned of import? But I didn't think imports had raised numbers. I figured price was right at $8.75

"Might" be a Lodge old style griddle, but one usually expects a raised molder's mark as well.

The lack of a raised mark or gate mark is what doesn't seem right, is it safe to say it's not imported? And any idea of dating? Any raised size markings done recently?

The underside of the handle is not atypical of late 19th/early 20th century griddles such as this.

Thanks, I really like the stuff with raised size numbers, that's why I bought it and for $8.75 I figured I couldn't go wrong, glad to know it's not import, guess it goes with the other unidentified raised number griddle I have.

I just had a thought, if this griddle is that old, but side gated, would that mean it was made by a larger more advanced foundry? I've read that no erie or griswold pans were gated so obviously the technology was available back then, but seems like it would be reserved for the big boys?

Side gating isn't necessarily indicative of a large foundry, just of someone willing and able to not settle for the simpler bottom gating technology.

Thanks for the info doug, when I get possession of it and cleaned up hopefully I will find more markings but I doubt it. Lodge has an old style griddle in the red book that looks close, but it also indicated with the raised 8 on top, that it should have an 8 on the bottom, unless the gunk is worse than the picture shows, I doubt there's anything hiding under there

Jeffrey, I like your griddle--maybe you should have a collection of that style?:chuckle: It was a "good buy" for sure--do let us see it cleaned up.
