some 'rusty gold' at a recent auction.

Griswold large block logo w/heat ring #7 (cleaned up awesome.)
Wagner Sydney O, #8 appears to be plated, pitted bottom (sad face) could only make out the word 'sydney' when I looked at before the auction.
Wagner, national dual logo #8.
and a Griswold square glass lid (which I think goes with the square (obviously) 768 skillet.

(this is my first attempt at imgur links... so bear with me.)

in the before pics, the two wagner pans are the two in the middle of the first pic (in front of the big long handled hearth skillet) and the griswold #7 is in the second pic. Sorry I didn't take any better before pics... I was kind of excited to start cleaning to see exactly what I had.

Good cleanup job on your great finds Doug! The pitting on the Wagner is a result of cooking on a wood stove or old style gas with a high sulfur content. It shows that good old skillet had lots of use.
Comment: I've lived in 2 houses which were built in 1918 and 1920, and both of them had vents for a wood burning stove in the kitchen. I think of those stoves as 19th century, but my aunts on the farms still had and used them in the early 1950s. And then, if you live in Maine, maybe you still do.;)

Nice score!!!

the two Wagners were $20 each and the griswold was only $27 and the griswold glass lid was $17. I guess I'll either start looking for the griswold square pan to go with my lid or just sell it on ebay. We already have the square wagner pan (with the correct glass lid)... that one is my wife's favorite one to use.

The auction was very strange. a place here in town that groups lots of consignment stuff and holds an auction on monday evenings. They just happened to have cast iron at the last two mondays. The first auction there were only about 12-15 people there... and most of them were regulars... they were also selling lunch boxes and nascar model cars and hand soap...

Last night was another auction with some cast iron, most was very rough... there were 3 large logo griswolds a 6, 7 and 9... the six was discolored from heat, like someone "cleaned" it by throwing it in a fire. the 7 was ok, but it was smooth, no heat ring and had a bit of wobble and it went for about $30... the 9 was pitted so bad you almost couldn't make out the logo. I bought a smooth bottom wagner #10 that was pretty flat some surface rust, but will clean up nicely. A favorite piqua smily logo #8... doesn't sit flat... not a spinner... but not perfectly flat either. And one of the hammered lodge 4 in 1 sets. I already have one.. but it only went for $20 and other than surface rust it should clean up nicely as well. Oh, also got an iron mountain DO lid #8. So now I guess I need to find a #8 iron mountain DO... to go with my lid.
