Recent Finds: BSR & Lodge

These are my recent "scores:" a BSR Red Mountain #8 (which I'd been wanting for a while) and a Lodge #8 deep skillet, with a lid. Neither was serviceable when I bought it, and I regret being in such a hurry to clean them up, as I don't have any before pics. Total of $20 for all 3 pieces, plus cleanup.

The Red Mountain was the nastiest skillet I've seen to date - at least 1/8" of crud on either side of the walls of the skillet. It's seasoned and lightly used for some popcorn, but will see it's first mess of okra today. Cooking surface shows some heavy wear (abuse?) which wasn't clear in it's uncleaned state. I'm optimistic that most of it will fill in nicely.

Here's the Lodge, with lid. One spot of pitting about nickel-sized, at 10 o'clock in the pic. I have only seasoned these so far. I bought this for the lid; turns out that the lid fits all my #8s, as well as my BSR Century #7 quite well. Both the skillet and lid were well covered in surface rust, but you can see that's gone now, with only minor residual staining. I figure that some use will cover that up with time.

That Lodge is a workhorse, great for everyday use. I did not know the lid would fit all those other pans.

Thanks for the information.

My #8 Lodge 10 1/4 inch lid does not come close to fitting my #7 BSR Red Mountain skillet or my BSR Century #7 chicken fryer.

Well, I stuck my foot in my mouth - should have known better than to say "all" without a careful test of each. That #8 Lodge lid in no way fits my #8 Red Mountain or #7 Martin. Also doesn't fit my #8 Wapak very well, but it'll cover it. It fits my #8 Lodge (egg pattern) and #8 Erie pretty well, but not the way it fits my #7 Century and #7 Century chicken fryer like a vault (better than the Lodge #8 it "goes with"). If it were that important, it would be interesting to do the same test with my Griswold #8 lid to see how the fits compare/contrast. That sounds like work :)

On a positive note, my Red Mountain sure did a good job with the okra last night, and it is darkening up nicely, to boot. Crazy how much satisfaction there is in restoring one of these old skillets to being useful again!
