Rubber in a Dutch Oven

A friend gave me a DO that belonged to her brother who passed away. I noticed something rubbery in the bottom and she said he use to melt rubber worms in it and make his own. Should I bother with trying to clean this up? The rubber stuff peeled right out but after a vinegar soak and some scrubbing there is still a rainbow looking stain where the rubber had been (reminds me of the way oil looks on water). So before I try anymore cleaning on it I wondered if it would end up a usable piece. It is nothing special, just a Taiwan made.

Thanks.

I can post a pic if needed.

Yes I think you should be able to make it a usable piece. Sounds like there's only a minor residue left. I would put it in the oven for an hour at 500 degrees, as if you were seasoning it only without oiling it first, doing it dry. That'll burn off any remaining residue. Might be a little stinky but it shouldn't be too bad with only a little residue to burn away.

Afterwards give it another cleaning then season it like normal, good to go.

Thanks EricC, I will continue to clean it then and see how it comes out. I hope to get it usable until I can find a nicer one, or at least one w/a lid.
