Sad iron/Lace iron

I believe the object in the photograph is not a child's toy but was used to iron lace with - also known as a "sad iron". It's barely 3" in length and just a tad over 1½" in height.

My grandfather (my late mom's dad) was born in 1884 and this belonged to his mom. There is the possibility that this piece might even go back further in my family's history. However, considering Grandpa's birth year, one can safely assume that this iron dates at least back to the late 1870's or early 1880's.

I recall (since my earliest childhood memories) that this tiny iron was displayed in Mom's sideboard and never used for ironing. It has always been in this condition and, as far as I know, has never been tampered with in any way. There is virtually no rust present, as you can see.

I have a #2 Wapak Sad Iron. Its very small too. Not sure if people used it or nor, or its a sellsmans sample? Mine is silver looking, Thats a great history yours has! I collect them and I have never seen this exact one.

I have found one like mine for sale in the UK and the seller advertises it as a: "Victorian Miniature Country House Flat Iron circa 1865". That means that my one could be approximately 157 years old - give or take a few years. The UK iron weighs 206g and is 80mm in length. Mine, however, is 72mm in length and weighs 140g, which probably points more towards a kid's toy or a salesman's sample than a grownup's lace iron.
