Should I attempt to return this?

I bought this DO + lid in an online auction. The pictures were inconclusive and the description vague, but it was sold as a matched set. And I was seduced by the very clear picture of the hammered lid. Well, it turns out that not only is the hammering different on the two pieces, but the lid is much too small for the DO. I'm thinking about asking if I can return them but am wondering if there's much chance I could sell the pieces separately and recoup my $77. I have no idea what they are, and any advice will be appreciated.

The pot is Lodge. The lid is not. It's from an unknown maker, and often referred to as "hammered ugly unknown" CI.

There would be more of a market for each if they were mated to corresponding parts of the same maker. There are a few collectors of the "ugly unknown" stuff, but not a significant number. Unless you find a Lodge hammered DO lid to match the pot, I'm afraid you probably won't realize the best potential return on investment.

I think what's most disappointing to me in these types of situations is when forum members ask about them only after they've made a bad decision and have already been parted from their money.

Was there a photo of the Dutch oven with the lid on it in the listing ? And , can you post a photo of it with the lid on it here ?

I mean if the lid doesn't fall right into the pot and does seal the top when on and it IS a hammered lid on a hammered pot , even though it is not right and YOU now know it , it could still be used and most people wouldn't think twice about weather it was made that way or not .

I understand your frustration and the seller was either dishonest or just didn't know any better . I'm just asking if it's usable . Because the truth is , anyone who is not a collector or big user of cast iron like we are would come to your home for a meal and most likely be impressed with the beautiful hammered pot .

If it was sold on ebay, you can get your money back if it was misrepresented. You said it was sold as a matched set. If it was described that way in the listing, you should have no problems getting your money back although some sellers also explicitly state they do not accept returns. Let ebay handle it if that's where you bought it.

It's also possibly the seller didn't realize it wasn't a matched set. If they have any type of seller rating to protect, they may just work with you for a return so they don't get a negative rating.
