Slant Griswold No. 8 Waffle Iron with Base...

Making rounds this afternoon... found this in a thrift store. (From what I have learned here)... this appears to be a No. 8 American Slant Griswold waffle iron with a high base (985). I think missing the Alaskan coil handles. I am unsure if the iron top/base are original matched pair (A & B ?). The pre-negotiation price was $125. As this is the first iron/base pair I have ever seen I felt I should return home and do some research. Completed sales prices seem to be in $150'ish range + shipping. (with outliers). I did not notice any cracks or obvious missing bits (sans coil). Members on this site indicate these are circa late teens/early 20's. I'm thinking I may re-visit the seller tomorrow...but, honestly, I don't know what I don't know. :icon_scratchchin: Any insights as to evaluating and appraising would be appreciated. Thank you.

885 and 886 are a matched pair. A and B are individual working pattern identifiers. 985 is a correct base. While a high base usually commands a premium over a low one, paddles with missing coil handles do not. Were it a low base with intact handles and no damage, $50-75 would be reasonable in the unrestored condition shown. But you'll have an impossible time finding original coil handles not already connected to some other paddles in order to rebuild these. $125 for this one as it sits is nonsense.

Thank you Doug...that is exactly the information I needed. As this was my first exposure I am glad I looked at it with my head and not my heart. I don't have deep pockets so unnecessary over-spending needs avoiding. I appreciate you sharing your expertise. Thanks.

Doug...

Just a quick follow up on this discussion..today I tracked Wagner waffle iron
on a high base. Prior to price negotiation it was in line with your pricing range.
(this one for $80.00). I did not pick it up as it would be mostly a shelf - sitter,
and I have other items I wanted to add to the CI pile first. Thanks again.
