Some Eye Candy

I have seen a few coal and oil stoves, do not recall this shape opening.

Has anyone seen an early coal / oil stove that has this rectangle opening,(stove eye) if so what brand stove?

It was found hanging is an old barn this past weekend in Maine.

I did see that the patent shows a round opening, my gridiron has a rectangle opening.

Doug D. Would it be a stretch of the imagination to think that George Cornwall, who was the inventor had A & W Mfg Co. make this for him. Or did A & W Mfg Co. purchase the rights?

On my gridiron there is the Pat. Date of Sept 5, 1876, the same as the Publication Date listed on the patent.

Also on my gridiron is the date May 27,1879

I think that I found the right Improvement in Gridirons patent, with the rectangle opening on the bottom.

A little more history for your eyes.

A & W Mfg. Co. = J. MCGREGOR ADAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. Robert B. Mitchell of Chicago, Illinois

Just the historian in me working over time.:icon_scratchchin:

The reason for the 2nd patent, was to adapt this style of gridiron to be used on coal-oil or gas stoves. The first patent has a round opening on the bottom for a round eye opening.

I thought these were for pleating skirts for Catholic school girls.

How in the **** do you find these things?! I need to get out more.
