Sounds

I was told a good quality pan pings when you tap the outer surface. I tried this and there is a big difference between my new lodge pan when comparing it to my old Findly pan. The Findly has a music quality while the lodge makes a duller ping noise.

Is there any truth to this

The saying is, and there is some validity to the statement, that a cracked pan can be detected by tapping and listening to the ringing sound, or rather lack thereof. But pans covered in crud, and also thicker, heavier pans, can have a dull sound whether they're cracked or not.

Doug is absolutely right .

As you have also found is that the older thinner pans will ring with a much brighter sounds than new OR old thick ones .

Playing with sound and cast iron can be fun and very tricky, but most of all pretty useless. Unfortunately two pieces from the same pattern can sound different unless exact scientific precision is used for the many variables in testing. I have spent hours tapping cast iron with a spoon and determined I could conclude nothing of any significance other than what Doug said, but we already knew the Griswold was thinner than the new Lodge by the look and feel.

Thanks for the thought, but not if they heard me. The dogs cover their ears and 'noise' is the best I can get from a person.
