Sportsman Grill flea market find.

I snagged a great Lodge Sportsman Grill at my local flea market today. It looks pretty new but has some rust. The door seams to be the worst. Im cleaning the door in a vinegar bath now. Im going to use it a few times and see if I want to go any further with the cleaning. Whats the best way to keep it from rusting? Season like a skillet, vegetable oil? I dont want to paint it but I also dont want it to rust.

Nice find! I bought one of those a few years back and I really like it. I read somewhere once upon a time that keeping moisture out of it is critical. It sounded as if the moisture mixied with the ash created some sort of corrosive acid and the rust followed.

Have fun with it!:icon_thumbsup:

Yes, oil it with veg oil. It will season itself when you use it. Oil on the grate will burn off and it will rust. That is part of the deal. The rust will protect the iron from further deterioration, but it is good to oil it between uses or not.

If for show only, season all of it like a skillet.

Moisture and wood ash will create... lye!

I don't think the lye is the problem, however... I think it is the moisture itself.

I tossed the door in the vinegar tank for a bit last week to knock the rust off, wire brushed the cooking grate, wiped them with veggy oil and lite the charcoal. Steaks turned out great.

Although I don't know if it would hurt the value of the piece in itself but couldn't you nickle plate the grill to fight off the rust? Just a thought. . .
