Stripping

Hello,
I have restored many things but a cast pan is not one of them. I have read a little and thinking of going this route. Please let me know if anything Im doing seems wrong or back :o wards.

1) Easy Off HD and Steel Wool to remove current finish (repeat if required)
2) Rinse with warm water and wipe dry
3) Season

Do you need to dry in oven at 250 for 30 minutes before seasoning?
Any other thoughts please feel free. I have attached picture of bare area Im trying to remove in hopes of making pan uniform in color.
Thanks for any and all help.
Brian

As noted in the Stripping article, the Easy Off HD in a bag method requires little more than rinsing off the dissolved goo. Since this pan has already been stripped of previous build-up and just given a manual seasoning or two, it should come off in a matter of minutes. The pan should be totally dried before applying your own seasoning oil and baking it on. Several minutes at 200 should do. See the Seasoning article for tips on various oils, temps, technique, etc.

Yes, your correct. I did three one hour soaks wiping off residue with paper towls each time before applying a new coat of HD. I also used 0000 Steel Wool working inside and out between apps.
Pan looks much better and hope to complete process yet tonight.
Thanks!

My Pan turned out uniform in color. Yah :-D Will post a picture this afternoon for all to see.
Thanks again for the assistance, Brian

Here is a picture of my first restoration. Mind you the Pan was pretty decent with no crud and or build up but molted or etched issues from seasoning it wrong and or lack of prep.
Not bad for a beginner but not great either. Lets to learn be happy its uniform and usable.
Thanks for comments and guidance. What goes around comes around.
Brian

That turned out nice Brian, now since you have one restoration under your belt you have a good idea of the process. Keep in mind when you find one with a lot of crud it may take a few days and sometimes more in the oven cleaner to get it stripped. And the warmer the weather if doing outside the better it works.

Thanks, I have some camping skillets (#8's) that have PLENTY of crud on them which I'll tackle once the weather breaks. For now Im going to read more on this site and take it all in. Never knew so much info was available and enjoying new hobby.
Funny how Ive been cooking with these pans for every but never knew the passion of collecting and or proper care. Appreciate the site and all of those who contribute. After all its the contributors that make the site and or forum.
Cheers!

Brian H - This site's "Cast Iron Restoration" section has great advice on stripping and seasoning that has always worked for me.

A good rinse with plain running water is all that's necessary.

COOL, so I finally built an E-tank and had the crazy idea of after the Easy-off trash bag treatment to clean off a Wagner 6 and put into the Etank for a few hours and man the stuff that came off of that pan.
