"The Favorite" 3 legged kettle

Picked this up a few weeks ago at an auction. It had been painted all over with a brush (should have given me a clue), but for $5 I couldn't resist. The paint was so thick that I couldn't even be sure there were letters on the bottom, let alone what they said. Threw it in the etank for a day, and still a lot of paint, crud, and rust on the inside. I then rigged up an anode suspended inside the kettle for another day, and got most of it clean. A little steel wool and elbow grease, and I was surprised at how nice it looked....Except for one small problem. A nice star shaped crack Right below the word "THE". I believe this is a piece from the Columbus Hollow Ware Co. 1882-1902. What a shame it has the crack, otherwise I think this is a really nice piece.

Oh how pretty Jody. I've never seen one or anything like it. But then I'm not a collector of CI either. I have a lot of pieces that I dearly love cooking in and a few that I'll be selling. Very very nice piece you have there.

Maybe this is one of those "for decoration" pieces--I have several, and they are fun to look at, although not to be used. If we were that old, we'd be worse than cracked!:chuckle:

I have a similar kettle with severely worn down enamel on the inside that I keep full of fatwood and kindling next to the fireplace.

Don't think I can make it a flower pot. Was thinking maybe a kitchen utensil holder, but I currently use a nice old crock for that ??
