The word "japanned" has to do with a style of finish, and nothing to do with Japan. But the truth is that it probably isn't japanning, but more like a layer of cooked on grease from heavy use.
Oh...!! That's what he was wondering about! Yes, I was referring the the black lacquer by that name. I don't know if that label has it, but I do know that it was often used on the background of brass labels in the day.

Oh ok lol you made my heart drop for a little bit. I haven't been collecting long at all I still have got a whole lot to learn although I have learned a lot from you good people here. I drove two hour to a antique mall that I knew of there was a wapak Indian head skillet there and also this Griswold little pot that had #6 I really liked it thinking I will be making another drive soon anybody have any idea of the value? Thanks again for your comments.

Asking 120 but I think he would take less it is a #8. Also had a gate marked Erie not sure which would be the most desirable ?

I paid $80 for my #8 Indian Wapak. More than I've paid for any skillet, but I love it, and that one is in almost pristine condition (at least the logo is... can't say about the rest). I have always sucked at investments, so take that into consideration, but I really think that $100 for that one would be a pretty sweet deal, and some day it will be worth much more. The Griswold spider brings so much because of the Griswold name and a cool logo. Wapak doesn't have the name, but has just as cool a logo.

Collecting is for the art and the heart, not speculation of price increases and because you have emotions mixed with your money, they don't mix. Investment is a word you tell your SO so they don't kill you when you buy something. Not saying it's bad, just mixing pleasure with business.

I try to view my collecting as an investment, as well as a pleasure. You never know when you may need to liquidate your collection to help pay for some unforeseen misfortune.

I like that Wagner #6, I see one sold on ebay for $120. The blue book has a value of $90.
Agreed. I like the strong, bold raised lettering on the lid.
