Today's splurge

For some time, every foray into Jesse Jame's antique Mall I've been drooling over a Erie #9 griddle. Drooling, for the $89 price tag was too rich for my blood. So today I see it has a sale tag, reduced to $39, so I figure what the hey? It has the "ERIE" at the usual position, and not just a 9 but a No. 9 at the 6 o'clock. Does that help to date it any? It's in stellar shape, in the bath right now to remove the usual carbon buildup, light and very pretty. Was $39 a decent price, I'm sure I didn't steal it but I can't say I got hurt.

Your "ERIE" handled griddle with a "No. 9" is about 120 years old. If it was a "No. 6", it would be valued in the $200-300 range. Unfortunately, the BB values the more common 7, 8, and 9 at far less-- $30. $89 would have definitely been too much; $39 in excellent condition sounds not too bad. Does it have a p/n on it?

I'm not seeing a #6 in current or recent auctions at that price point. I do see a few marked "6A" (as opposed to "No. 6") that aren't getting much attention over $100. The BB doesn't show the Erie handled griddle marked other than "No. X", so I'm not sure if they are or aren't differentiating between the two types of markings. Although recently reprinted (and allegedly revised), the BB doesn't seem to have had its values changed too much over the previously published version. I would tend to take the variations in values of different sizes of the same piece in the book as an indication of relative scarcity, and rely more on what they're actually seen having been sold for on eBay as an indicator of current values.
