As camping season in the desert southwest is about
to kick in I thought it appropriate to add a camp oven
to my options.
Tracked this unmarked Lodge (with lid) at a local Thrift
store. They wanted $95.00... I negotiated a sale price of
$50.00 . Not a "great !" price , but a "good" price. My
greatest concern was if a crack was hidden under the
schmutz. Careful examination was reassuring but not
conclusive...had to wait until post resuscitation.
The "after" photos indicate 1st pass in the oven with
Crisco application. I am pleased with the cosmetics...but,
realize the "tell" will be after utilization with coal based
camp fire usage.
For the un-initiated...these are heavy... I'm guessing 20 +
lbs. . This oven turned out to be in pretty good nick... snug
lid, no cracks, decent cook surface. This will be a good camp
companion for my bailed Dutch oven.
1st up.... camp peach cobbler.
