Unmarked waffle iron

Can anyone tell me anything about this waffle iron? Both paddles have the same markings--just the numeral 8. Sure would like to know who made it and when. I've looked in both the red and blue books and can't find anything that looks like it. Thanks!

I don't know why this photo turned out to be huge. I don't see a way to delete it. I apologize....

Just a SWAG, but it looks like an early 1900's attempt by Lodge or ???? to use Griswolds ball hinge for competitive irons. Someone may have used an altered set of Griswold paddles as a pattern.

This is good information. When I looked in the R/B books, the only similarity I could come up with was Griswold--the wire handles and especially the little mountain-shaped edging where the handle meets the paddles. I had wondered if Griswold made irons w/o their TM for sale at hardware stores, etc., like they and others did with skillets. My base also has a raised 8 on the bottom where the handle meets the ring--glad to see that I have a matched pair, even though who they are is kind of mysterious!

Thanks all--if you stumble across any other resource, I'd be happy to know about it.:!:

Donna, I finally ordered the Red Book. It arrived yesterday! So ...

On page 234 of the RB (I've been waiting a long time to be able say that!) there is a Lodge that looks almost exactly like yours. The difference is, the one in the book has a Lodge arc logo and a different handle. The book mentions one with wire handles, which I assume means handles like yours.

That waffle iron is now on my wish list!

Donna...In my post I referenced a link that had the information you were looking for. The very same information I gave back in March was what Spurgeon posted today. In that post back in March was another link that showed the pics of the iron I have. If you click on it you will see those pics and compare to the iron you have which most likely is a Lodge also. If you have the base try to include a pic with your paddles next time. That base will sometimes give a clue to which iron you have. The pin at the swivel joint was something that Lodge also incorporated which there again helps eliminate other makers.
I do not think Griswold manufactured WI's unmarked, at least not for their on brand. If I'm wrong I'm for sure DougD will correct me.

Actually, I did open the link you sent--very helpful info. What I meant in my message was that I had PREVIOUSLY wondered about a possible Griswold link due to the peak where the handle attaches to the paddle.

I'm attaching pics of the base as you suggested; it has the raised 8 on the underside, as you mentioned yours has. I previously thought this WI was a Wagner because someone I know said that the hole through the cup in the base was a Wagner identifier. Being new to CI, I am learning, learning....

Thanks,
Donna

Omigosh, you are so right! That's almost exactly my WI, without the LODGE or the 8 under the handles. And, of course, mine has the wire handles. Thanks for that page number.

Thanks Donna for the additional pictures of the base. Fairly certain the base and the paddles are not a match. WI's are to me the hardest CI pieces to match up with proper bases. Your base is a E.C. Simmons base and is very much worn. The hole where the swivel sets should have been similar to a drilled hole that one would make w/ a drill bit. I still believe the paddles are Lodge and if so there will probably be a lot of slop "play" when the paddles set into the frame of the base.
Attached is a Google link you can visit and view the base more closely.
You can also go to CIC and look under collector resources/informational links. I think it mentions that the E.C.Simmons & Shapleigh WI's were manufactured by Stover.

Thanks, MD, for the information. It sounds as if I have yet a second WI with mismatched base. I will test it out for sloppy fit as you suggested in the next several days. I was lucky enough with the first mismatch to find someone who wanted to trade; hopefully I'll be able to find someone who wants to trade me a Lodge base.... (Perhaps we new folks should shy away from waffle irons!)
