Using cast iron in the cold.

I’m wanting to take a skillet and waffle iron on a camping trip in December. My concern is using them in the cold weather. If it’s getting down into the teens or twenties during the night, do you guys think there is a risk of either of them cracking due to temperature shock when I start heating them on the camp stove or open fire? My stove has a small burner on it so I can start out on a pretty low flame.

A low burner and giving it extra time on low before gradually raising the temp in steps would be the best idea. Or, if you can, set them near the campfire to warm up first.

My "home" skillets were passed down to me from grandmothers. My "camping" skillets didn't cost me anything or very little. I neither abuse them nor worry about them. No issues so far by gradually warming them before using over higher heat.

Just keep them near the fire, upside down to keep ashes out, and youll be fine. I would let them cool down kind of slowly too, being in the cold.
