Victoria Cauldron???

I recently acquired a cast iron cauldron that is marked "VICTORIA" on the side. It also appears to have the holding capacity. Looks like it says "3 1/2 G", and it does look like it would hold 3.5 gallons. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of the Victoria foundry and how old it might be. It does bear the round indented sprue mark on the bottom. I had read that these were typical during the 18th century, but were used longer on larger cast iron pieces, so it most likely 19th century. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Josh

Darn, old post and no pics. Found a Victoria foundry in Kingston, Ontario mid to late 19th century owned by Chown and Cunningham.

Rob, as you know historical record keeping sucks. It won’t help, but it is not just foundries and cast iron. It is everything from ancestry to zoology. Trashing and burning records of the past has and is normal society plague and it is getting worse, irrelevant of the internet, with buyouts, design and management changes.

Compared to the past, the internet now makes researching the past a cake walk, but is far from being able to provide information that was never saved. So research continues to be a task that does not have finite ends. We will never know how high we can build a sand pile, or how high they got it 1,000 years ago.

I suspect, even though Doug D. knows thousands of times more than the rest of us, that he feels the frustration of lack of information and ignorance that we feel. Historical research is more about the work than the results. One needs to enjoy the journey.

But a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Info on Canadian iron has been non-existent, trying to change that.
