Waffle iron wood handle restoration

I have been working on this one for a while. It did not come with a stand, so i will either find one at some point or just use it as is. the handles are wood, so I am taking extra care with restoring those separately. Any recommendations on wood handle restoration?

A set of this vintage would likely only had short wooden dowels, probably hickory, inserted into the sockets of the casting. They may or may not have been lacquered black. The matching scissor hinge base is going to be tough to find. P/n 982 is correct for this Victor waffle iron.

The look vaguely black. I have been reading about treating wood for restoration purposes (other projects). I am more concerned with them splitting if I even try to carefully treat them. I know I cannot "readd" moisture to wood, but it will take a minute to work on. I do think I have the original handles not manufactured replacements.

From additional research, finding a base for this might be impossible or expensive.
