I am restoring a waffle iron for a friend at my church. I have never seen one marked like this before. one piece has 2 patent dates and the other has the g on Griswold and on mfg like I have never seen. what can you tell me about

Quite the ghost fest there. Pattern number moved, and PAT. APP'D. FOR under the top date. One patent refers to the iron itself, the other to the base. I have seen that G style on an older square Griswold WI.
 
I have a #975 base on another #8 WI it has a ball hinge tried this on in that base it doesn't rotate smoothly around in ball socket. hinge is not a true ball.

That's an acorn hinge. The bases shown in the BB with acorn hinge irons on them look the same as the ones with ball hinges on them, and the p/ns are not given. Try looking for a p/n 884 base, but not the finger hinge version. Not sure what the actual difference from the 975 is unless it's diameter of the socket.
