Waffle Irons - How do you use them

on an electric coil stovetop. I'm considering adding a waffle iron to the mix and really want to know how I'd use it with my range. The one I'm looking at has a short base

The shorter base will make turning the paddles a bit more unwieldy, but not impossible. The trick will be in determining the right burner temperature setting for the closer proximity to the heat source.

so essentially you put the base over the coils and the waffle iron itself never really touches the coils?

Correct. You would preheat the irons before adding the batter.
