Wagner Oval roaster

I bought this one today. I paid $35 and I am not sure whether I paid too much? The lid looks like the one on page 56 of the red book, at the top, but the roaster looks like the one on the bottom of the page. Maybe it's two different pieces married together? All of the roasters seem to have size numbers but I'm not sure how to figure out what size number this one is because it only has the P/N. I like that it has the patent info in it.

Based on the size per the P/N I'm thinking maybe a #5. I'm also thinking it may have had an italic Wagner Ware lid as a matching set. If so then I would say (with matching lid of course) it was worth the money. There's a pic of one on page 47 of the collectors guide to Wagner Ware (paper back) but again I am just guessing since I do not have the Red Book.

Michael, do you think they didn't come together as a set? They both have 263 on them so I was thinking they might have, even though they have the different Wagner fonts. The red book doesn't have a picture of the bottom of the roaster with this lid. :(

I just noticed that the cast iron oval roaster on page 55 has the stylized logo on the bottom and the block logo, patent lid so maybe this was sold as a set. It sure fits like it came together.

Based on the CIC data the "Stylized" logo was adopted by Wagner in 1922 and was kept until 1959. Since your roaster has the stylized logo I am presuming that the lid for it should have been the same. There had to be a change-over period and the P/N may have not changed from block style lettering to the stylized lettering. I have no doubt that the lid you have fits your roaster but it just my theory that the matching lid would have stylized lettering as the picture I referred to in the previous post.
I may be completely wrong Bonnie (wouldn't be the first time) so don't go throw away your lid because of my post.
What's really strange is I have a "hammered" Wagner Ware stylized logo round roaster (12 1/2 pint) no P/N with lid and inside the lid it has "Drip Drop Self Basting Dutch Oven" in block lettering P/N 3248 C, along with the Pat. dates same as your lid. It has always been confusing to me why the pot says round roaster and the lid says dutch oven....go figure.

DougD, do you think this is the right lid?

I know DougD knows the answer to my question because he has the same roaster posted as pic one in the cast aluminum slide show. I'm gonna make mine shinier than his. Nobody said drills aren't allowed on aluminum. :icon_rofl:

Bonnie...Look on page 247 of the BB and there is a chart that has size #'s which correspond to measurements. I was guessing yesterday when I told you it may be a #5. According to the P/N I believe it's a #3. Wagner used the same molds for CA as they did for CI according to what I read. That buffing wheel along w/some polish should give it a mirror finish.

Thanks Michael, I measured it and I believe it is a #3 also. I started working on it yesterday and it looks pretty shiny. Not near as shiny as Doug's tea kettle but I'm sure with time it will get there. His tea kettle is shiny enough to use for a rescue signal if you get lost in the woods. :chuckle:

Here is Doug's tea kettle. That is crazy shiny!!
