Was thinking about getting this...

i saw this Dutch oven today at a store. I was thinking about picking it up. It won't need much work, just a little rusty and a smidge dirty. However it has a very slight wobble. I think it's a medium block logo?

Only a few instances of logos that vary appreciably from the normal Griswold TMs are called "medium block". This one would still be a large block. The lid, however, is not Griswold.

Thank you Doug. I woke up this morning still thinking about it...that's usually a sign to go back. Funny you should mention the lid not being Griswold. I have been looking for a #8 dutch oven for a while and saw this one at a shop selling vintage cast iron hardware (such as pullies, iron tongs, old anvils, etc). It was the only item of cookware in the place and tucked on the bottom of a wooden shelf of rusty tools. I saw it and didn't think it was a Griswold or Wagner right away, but that didn't make it undesirable to me. I remember thinking 'I wonder who made that.' When I picked it up I was a little surprised. I guess those brands that I see often must have some little something in their handle or style that I didn't know I had learned to identify. The lid threw me at first glance. Or I'm just kidding myself and it was just a random thing.

My take, Nichole--go back and get it, if the price is okay for you. A second look is always a good idea--be very critical so you're really sure about wanting it. That Dutch oven called to you to dig it out--have been there and done that. I'd love to see the upper part of the lid; the interior pattern is one I'm not familiar with. And yes, you'll eventually get a feel for shapes and styles of CI utensils; it just takes lots of looking and paying close attention to differences between one thing and another. Lots of help available here on this forum too. Good hunting!

I went back and got the dutch oven, no regrets. Here is a picture of the lid top as requested.

Thank you for the picture, Nichole. Does anybody recognize the lid? The shape is somewhat reminiscent of 1930s vintage Wagner, but it's definitely different from my DO lid, which is my point of reference. Hope this pot becomes a great user for you in the coming year!

Thanks guys! I lost the use of my mechanic neighbor's e-tank because he just moved. I'd bring brownies or cookies and he'd loan me a bit of space along side his car/tool stuff in the tank. This piece is undergoing a lye treatment. Hope it works as well as the tank did. Fortunately it's not in very bad shape, gunk wise. It's thick around the bail handles and rim of the lid though. I can't wait to get something cooking in it. :tasty:
