What is this?

I picked up this little guy at the flea market last weekend. Its cast iron and stands about 4.75 inches tall. Im not sure if it is a ashtray or a candle holder. And I'm unsure of the age. Is there anyone who can help me find out more info on this

Looks like an owl that would stand up, and possibly hold a kitchen sponge or other dishwashing utensil, though it being CI makes it a poor choice for such, considering putting anything wet in it would cause rust. Maybe someone else will chime in with other thoughts.

My sister in law has one that she uses as a guest ash tray on the back patio. Hers has porcelain on the outside.

It's shape reminds me very much of a salt cellar. I'd clean it up find a matching salt spoon and use it as such!

I think it is a candle votive or incense burner. The open eyes would light up. Probably Asian.
