I posted about this teapot the other day ... I picked it up for $10, because that was all the cash I had on me and the guy said I could pick out anything on the table and he would let me have it for the $10. I should have picked something else. Ugh.
I took the teapot out of the lye today, scrubbed it with a steel brush (the crud just melted off!) but I am left with a very rusty and pitted pot. I also discovered a crack. I put the pot in my vinegar bucket for 30 minutes (not sure that was good for the bail, but I figured the pot was toast anyway.) Then I scrubbed it with a Chore Boy. It is still very rusty.
When I bought the pot it had a layer of thick goop inside. It was almost a cross between vaseline and the green slime in Ghostbusters. (only it was yellow). So, party to clean the inside more and partly to see if the crack leaked, I put it on the stove and brought the water to a boil.
No leaking with just water and no heat ...
I started out with the eye set to 3. I did 10 minutes each at 3, 5, 7 and finally turned it up to 9.
Well, it still doesn't leak, but I succeeded in making the crack a little longer. Oops.
So, this thing is too big for my e-bucket. I have a bigger container I can use. I'll just need to wire it up. However, is it worth the trouble? Or should I mark this up to a lesson learned, paint it with black Rustoleum and call it a day?
