What was this used for?

Thank you for accepting me into your group. I am asking for help identifying what this may have been used for.

castresize.jpg It is 10 1/2" rim to rim, 3 1/2 deep.
 
I'm not sure it's even cookware related. If so, perhaps something for roasting some kind of vegetables over a fire. A deep frying basket? If the crook at the apex of the bail handle is original, it would suggest being made to hang while in use.
