Where'd That Screw Come From????

My hubby and I found some CI treasures over the weekend. The in one unmarked #10 Wanger I picked up for $15. Excited about it. There is one thing odd that I noticed right away. Looking at the bottom of the handle the is a small screw. I remember seeing a post some where talking about it. But can't remember where I saw it. Can you please tell me why they would put a screw in and about what years they may have done that?
