New Collector Disaster

I picked out one from a box I was given, to try my hand at cleaning an old skillet. This one looked the oldest, messiest, and bigest challenge. I was using the elbow grease and oven cleaner method, and was on the second day of scraping and spraying. Was making good progress on about an eight inch of accumulated gunk when disaster struck. As I was turning it over, it slipped out of my hand. Of course I was over the concrete in the backyard, and it fell on the handle. I was shocked . I know CI is not indestructible, but this was a heartbreak.
So, a hard lesson learned for a new collector.
Anyone care to tell me the bad news on what this was (raised JP with 8 on the handle); and was to be the newest addition to my collection

Even missing a handle it's life may not need to come to an end. I snapped a handle off a #10 Erie a while back and turned it into a dedicated pan for my charcoal green egg grill. Not my finest moment but works like a charm.

I also have a marked J.P skillet so there seem to be plenty hanging around.

I also have the same skillet except my intials are " TS", maybe a fellow foundry worker.?.
